Noise performance is good but not exceptional. Water flow noise is moderate, and dish placement produces audible sound. 4. 20 Gauge: The Budget Option
20 gauge (0.9mm) stainless steel is the thinnest commonly used material for kitchen sinks. It is primarily found in budget-oriented products (under $150 retail) and secondary sink applications.
Dent resistance is the primary concern with 20 gauge material. Moderate impact from heavy cookware can cause visible dents, particularly in the bottom of the bowl where support is minimal. Dents not only affect appearance but can create low spots where water pools, potentially leading to mineral deposits and staining.
Noise performance is noticeably poorer than thicker gauges. Water flow produces a characteristic 'tinny' sound, and dish placement creates loud metallic clanging. Sound-deadening pads help but cannot fully compensate for the lack of material mass. The thin material vibrates more readily, amplifying transmitted noise.
Structural limitations require additional support for larger sinks. Sinks over 25 inches in length may need center support brackets or reinforced mounting systems to prevent sagging or flexing. Undermount installation with 20 gauge material requires careful adhesive application and may not be suitable for heavy stone countertops.
Despite its limitations, 20 gauge has a valid market position. For rental properties, secondary/prep sinks, outdoor kitchens, and markets where price is the primary purchase driver, 20 gauge sinks offer acceptable functionality at minimum cost. The key is setting appropriate quality expectations and ensuring adequate support during installation.

Retail prices are typically under $150. Quality control of welding, finishing, and sound-deadening is critical to ensure acceptable performance.
Panel thickness (the flat rim surrounding the bowl) should be considered separately from bowl thickness. Quality sinks use 3mm+ panel thickness for mounting stability, regardless of bowl gauge. Thin panels (under 2mm) can flex under load, compromising the seal between sink and countertop. For undermount installation, panel thickness is critical for long-term reliability.
